Movie Review: Pari—Truly Not a Fairy Tale

The title Pari: Not a Fairy Tale and the several teasers (read ‘screamers’) on YouTube had already set the tempo for this movie. The horror film lover in me was mesmerized by the short videos that showed vignettes of Anushka Sharma’s part innocent-part ugly face, long nails, and hideous laughter. So much so that when nobody was available to accompany me to yesterday morning’s show, I decided to go for it alone.
The last scary Hindi movie I remember watching was Vikram Bhatt’s 1920. I was looking forward to being spooked out of my senses with this movie. And I was not disappointed.
The eerie sense of foreboding starts right from the first scene with the story opening to a rain-drenched terrace in Kolkata where Arnab (Parambrata Chatterjee) is interacting with Piyali (Ritabhari Chakraborty) as part of a matchmaking meeting.
